Here what a "multifaceted-entertainer and songwriter" has to say. If you like music and horse riding, by all means check out his web site below. "After listening to Pierre Wauters' exciting new album for the umpteenth time, I have decided to put it on again. From the opening few bars, there is a movement which I find infectious, if not addictive. The work creates more space for upliftment than all the volumes of rote which are currently available everywhere. Pierre has found a blend of style and feel which any contemporary composer would envy. The recurring piano themes are generously sprinkled with tasty bits of masterful guitar. This is a superb recording of fresh ideas. The musicianship is faultless. This C.D. is a must have for all lovers of intelligent artwork everywhere. ****(1/2) (I'm certain that the next one will be even better.)" Harmony Aquarian ------- Real Groove Magazine, issue 120,
October 2003 "With clever wordplay, bouncing keys and enthusiasm, this Nelson's composer wares are displayed in a greater variety of styles. To read the full review click on the picture above ------- Metro Magazine, December 2003New Music Releases, page 126 Gary Steel "Clearly Wauters is a gifted player, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer" After reading the "review" (for lack of a more appropriate word) many times, we are confused. Should we just thank Gary for this "piece of nothingness" that simply confirms the obvious to everyone? Besides, Metro Magazine is an NZ magazine clearly geared towards the upper class, not the average Kiwi. So what is the point publishing in that 'supersize', 'supergloss' magazine that Wauters' music "fails" to project something recognizable to the average New Zealander ? Yes, Wauters music is "unhip", thank God for that. As Harmony Aquarian put it "The work creates more space for upliftment than all the volumes of rote which are currently available everywhere'". Wauters has his own exclusive style, something rarely seen these days coming out of the musical world. Gary's comment that "Wauters' odd aesthetic fails to project anything recognisable to the average New Zealander'" could be taken as rather insulting to us 'average New Zealanders'. If you consider yourself an average Kiwi, does this mean that you can only mentally handle the volumes of rote currently offered by the music giant corporations? If you consider yourself an 'above average Kiwi', then it is clear from Gary's comments that this CD is for YOU! And where does Gary get off with his 'quirky antipodean in self-imposed exile' comment? Aren't all Kiwi's immigrants or descendants from immigrants? Therefore, are we all not in a self-imposed exile (including Gary)? If Paul Holmes gets his hands smacked for his derogative comments then so should Gary Steel. As a Kiwi, I love Pierre Wauters music along with hundreds of other Kiwis (average and all). Gary has got one thing right: 'it is compelling music', that is music that is unexpected, not known, seen or experienced before. So, if you're sick of the rote that's currently out there and are open to broadening your musical horizons, then the tide might turn for you too. sought for NZ recorded music We've got it all in New Zealand, just as good if not better than USA. Our recording studios and mastering facilities are not as big and glamorous as overseas ones but, hey, we have that kiwi ingenuity !! The album "When The Tide Turns" was entirely recorded in Nelson (BBX Music) and mastered in Wellington (Marmelade studio). We tried Studio 301 in Sydney for one track but found no significant difference with our material produced here. Why is it therefore that Kiwis have this inferiority complex and buy so much into America ? Ironically it is hard to get support for a Nelson composer in Nelson. This seems to be because the industry is too busy with the "big releases", most of which are from US it goes without saying. At the time of this writing, the CD store Sounds in Nelson is literally covered with posters of Salmonella Dubs (a kiwi band, so it's not too bad) and Norah Jones' CD is still on the 'New Raleases' shelf (you must be joking!!). It took us 4 visits and 1 month of waiting to get one of our own posters on the wall. These thoughts are the body of the article in the Leader. The article is a bit negative when it says "no one is listening to them [Pierre's two CDs]". We never said that and we are by no mean discouraged and complaining about it. It is just that a bit more enthusiasm for kiwi productions would be welcome. Apart from that, thanks to The Leader for letting us express our voice in a full page article. I can't fault Pierre's brilliance as a musician." NZ Woman's Weekly is the first nationwide magazine to review When The Tide Turns. Des Mills is the person who has reviewed nouveau piano. Des has an obvious slant towards instrumental music. Well Des, When The Tide Turns is NOT instrumental, so there is no point whining about it. Maybe a few words about what the album actually is as opposed to what the album is not would have been appropriate. Thank you for the good words anyway.
